Newton Parent Advisory Council Meeting
Next
Newton Parent Advisory Council on Special Education meeting is on Wednesday
January 30, 2008, 7 – 9:00 PM in Room 318, Education Center,
100 Walnut St, Newton, MA 02460. The Newton PAC has a web site now at: www.newtonpac.org; http://www.newtonpac.org/>
.
John Passarini Ed.D. will speak on adapted physical education and inclusive
school environments that help all students to succeed. John has experience
working with students with a wide range of disabilities, including autism,
learning and physical disabilities. He was the National Adapted Physical
Education Teacher of the year in 2000 and was selected from 185,000 nominees to
be the Disney Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 2003. John grew up in Newton and attended Newton
schools with a learning disability. Although John was embarrassed by his
poor academic skills, he was supported by his good attitude, his friends and
strong athletic skills. In junior high he met an English and
Social Studies teacher who mentored him and helped him to progress
academically.
In 1970, John became a physical education teacher in Waltham
and then in Wayland, MA where he met Katie, a young woman with
physical disabilities who inspired him to focus on adapted physical
education. “Katie taught me that the human spirit has unlimited
potential. [She] taught me to be patient, to be confident, to be
hopeful.” John now teaches adapted physical education at Salem State,
Northeastern and Boston
University. His
website is www.johnpassarini.com. For
more information, please email info at newtonpac.org.
School Committee FY09
Budget Deliberations
The Superintendent presented his Override Budget on January 15,
2008 and now the School Committee has begun its deliberations. This
budget reflects what school department programs and services would
look like with the additional funds available if the override passes.
The School Committee will review the Allocation Budget presented
by the Superintendent on January 28, 2008. The Allocation Budget reflects
what the school department programs and services would be with the revenues
available without a tax override.
The second meeting to discuss the Allocation Budget will be held
on Monday January 28, 2008 at 7:30pm at Day Middle School.
Please join us at this meeting; there will be a group of Cabot Parents
attending. This budget will reflect what the school department programs
and services will be with the revenues available without a tax override. The
Committee will take a straw vote on both budgets on February 4, 2008 and hold a
public hearing on February 6, 2008 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Day Middle
School auditorium. This is the chance for
the public to weigh in on both budgets. A final vote on the budgets will
be held on February 11, 2008. Click on to the School Committee website to
see the guidelines for the non-override budget. Click Override
Budget to review the proposed FY09 Budget.

part of this all-Newton event that will, bring lots of people together AND raise money for Cabot and other schools! Jennifer Huntington granx4 at gmail.com.
Join Friends, Neighbors and
Educational Leaders at the 2008 Winter Dinner Series
In just two weeks time the first of the Newton Schools Foundation dinners
will be held around town. Last year these wonderful events raised lots of money
that got distributed to the teachers in your schools so that they could plan
curriculum and buy equipment to
provide even more exciting classes and subjects for your children.
Right
now we need people to buy tickets, take a table and get their friends to come,
and spread the word around town! Ticket sales are coming in, but we want every
dinner to be filled to capacity, and fun for everyone who attends! Here are two
restaurant venues that still have lots of space:
Monday, Feb. 4 - Ariadne $150 per ticket
Tuesday, Feb. 5 - Legal Sea Foods - $200 per ticket
There will be lively speakers, fabulous food and welcoming hosts - so, please
if you can use this weekend to call friends and family and buy tickets, that
would be WONDERFUL. Your participation will help teachers! Jennifer Huntington
(chair of the Dinners Committee for the NSF) Home: (617)232-2310 Cell: (617)935-1727.

Newton Food Pantry Donations
The Social Action Committee will
be collecting non-perishable food items for the food pantry in Newton at the Cabot Family Dance on February

foods: Canned fruit, meals in a can (stews w/ meat, beef ravioli,
spaghetti and meat balls, etc.), canned vegetables (especially peas and beets),
and peanut butter
Please donate "regular" size jars/bottles of food,
which are about the 14-16 ounces; the family size/extra large cans are too
large to store on the Food Pantry shelves. If you have any questions

Invention
Invasion Volunteers
Interested in helping out with a
fun and exciting PTO program? Only have a limited amount of time but you
want to contribute? Then we could use your help. We are looking for
a parent volunteer to help us with the Annual Invention Invasion. The
Invention Invasion is a fun evening where Cabot students present an “invention”
that they have designed. This year it will take place on Tuesday, March
18th. You don’t need to be a scientist. All you need is a desire to
help! Contact Vicki Gartland (vgartland at comcast.net) or Karen Jauregui (kjauregui at repligen.com) if you are interested.
FoodPlay Student
and Parent Presentations
Come and see a fun way in which your children learn about
healthy nutrition on February 12, 2008. Underwood Elementary School Gymnasium 7:00 – 8:00
PM presented by Live Health and Nutrition Theater. This play will also be
performed at Cabot on Feb 8th for the 3rd & 4th graders.
FOODPLAY (K - 5th Grades) is an Emmy Award-winning live
theater show that combines fantastic feats of juggling, captivating characters,
music, magic, and audience participation with motivating health messages to
help children take charge of growing up healthy and fit. Addressing the major
nutrition, fitness, and self-esteem concerns affecting today's schoolchildren,
FOODPLAY provides kids with the practical tools they need to improve their
eating and exercise habits--all in a spirit of fun and celebration! FOODPLAY programs are a great way to trigger
school-wide excitement and get everyone on board to work together to improve
the nutrition and health environment in schools and communities.
New Fundraising Program Introduced - Ariadne PTO Partners
Being parents we know the importance of your children's education. With this in mind we are participating in a new program
called Ariadne PTO Partners. We have signed up Cabot PTO for the Ariadne PTO Partners program and five percent every
purchase you make at Ariadne all year (even summer months) will be donated to the Cabot PTO. The first week of the month
we will receive a check from Ariadne . There is no limit to the amount that can be raised and this is good on any purchase in the
restaurant, lunch dinner, cocktails, private parties, even take out, catering and gift cards. You simply need to write CABOT on
your receipt and give it to your server and anyone can participate grandparents, aunts, uncles & friends.
Jabberwock
Editor Needed!
We are looking for an additional Jabberwock editor for the next
year. This is a great opportunity to have some first hand knowledge of
what is going on around Cabot, get to know many of the faculty and PTO chair
people and help out your school with this invaluable newsletter. The
responsibility will be shared by 3 individuals, so you will have to edit only 3
or 4 issues per year. This is a great opportunity for someone interested
in getting involved, but it can be done in the comfort of your own home. If
interested, or if you have any questions, please contact either Mary Kathryn
Fallon, marykathf at aol.com
or Archana Vahalia, auvpto at aol.com.
Thanks!
