Please mark your calendars for the fun upcoming Cabot Events we have planned for the whole family. The Annual Cabot Family Dance will be held on February 2, 2008 and the Cabot Connecting Families Bowling Day will be held on February 9, 2008!  Come join us and have some fun, while catching up with other Cabot families!!

We wish to extend thanks to all the families who have so generously participated in this year’s Campaign for Cabot.  So far 35% of families have participated, please help us reach our goal of 100% participation.  Every child benefits from the programming and services the PTO provides.  Please do your part – no matter what your level of giving, we are grateful and will put it to good use! Don’t forget to get your donation in by February 2, 2008  to be entered into the raffle to win an Apple iPOD shuffle, (to be raffled off at the Family Dance). Congratulations to Angela DiLeo who won the IPOD Shuffle we raffled off in December!

A word on traffic around the school – thank you to so many of you who have placed the safety of our children as your first priority.  All of our patience is tested when the weather affects our travels – and we all have a common goal: to bring our children to and from school in a safe environment. A few specific reminders:

Þ    Do not block driveways; all of our neighbors must be able to access their own driveways at all times. This is common courtesy and we ask your help in this matter.

Þ    Bridges Avenue is a one-way street at all times, going from Cabot Street toward Norwood Avenue.  This is a new designation this year.  Please do not turn down Bridges Avenue from Norwood Avenue

Þ    Please pull all the way to the top of the Blue Lane to let your child out. When cars stop at the Kindergarten wing to allow students to get in and out of cars, and there are lots of spaces in front of them, it causes gridlock and does not allow for a successful use of the blue lane.

Þ    When waiting in your car in the blue lane, please do not pull up on the sidewalk.  Although the intention is to make more room for the cars to pass by, it leave little to no room for the students walking on the sidewalk.  We need to keep the sidewalks clear for the pedestrians.

Þ    Please do not drop students off on Bridges Ave.  Cars are not expecting it and this is not safe.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us!

   Recent Events at cabot

Technology Committee
The PTO Technology Committee utilized part of their $15,000 budget to purchase speakers for all the classrooms.  These speakers will enable teachers to hook up to their laptops, desks and LCD projectors, making teaching whole class lessons on the internet, such as with Brainpop ( a program provided by PTO Enrichment Grant funds). Thanks to the PTO  Technology Committee, Lani Gerson and Brenda Doucette, Instructional Technology Specialist for Angier, Cabot and Pierce Schools.

Library Clean-Up!
Thanks to a great group of very enthusiastic volunteers, the library was cleaned-up last Friday. We listened to music, straightened books, and did a lot of small tasks (putting labels on donated books etc).  Thanks go to Anya Bassett, Sandy Connors, Faith Witte, Gail Harris, Emily Hess, Jen Hyde, Kate Johnson, Andrea Plotkin, Don Stanton, Lisa Svensson, Margaret Wazuka.  And of course, our fearless leader, Lani Gerson!

  Volunteers Needed

Invention Invasion Volunteers

Interested in helping out with a fun and exciting PTO program?  Only have a limited amount of time but you want to contribute?  Then we could use your help.  We are looking for a parent volunteer to help us with the Annual Invention Invasion. The Invention Invasion is a fun evening where Cabot students present an “invention” that they have designed.  This year it will take place on Tuesday, March 18th.  You don’t need to be a scientist.  All you need is a desire to help!  Contact Vicki Gartland (vgartland at comcast.net) or Karen Jauregui (kjauregui at repligen.com) if you are interested.

Jabberwock New Format on the way and Editors Needed!

We know that the Jabberwock has been a bit difficult to read since we switched it to a Word document.  With the help of our talented webmaster, Mie-Yun Lee, we are researching programs to make the Jabberwock more readable and user friendly.  We are also in need of 2 new Jabberwock editors for next year.  This is a great opportunity to have some first hand knowledge of what is going on around Cabot, get to know many of the faculty and PTO chair people and help out your school with this invaluable newsletter.  The responsibility will be shared by 3 individuals, so you will have to edit only 3 or 4 issues per year.  This is a great opportunity for someone interested in getting involved, but it can be done in the comfort of your own home. If interested, or if you have any questions, please contact either Mary Kathryn Fallon, marykathf at aol.com or Archana Vahalia, auvpto at aol.com. Thanks!

CABOT BROADCAST

Concerns from the Food Service about late lunch menus

We are finding many menus are being returned late to the schools.  When this happens, the Elementary Office cannot process them in time to order your child(ren)’s lunch.  Your child(ren) then end up in the kitchen where he or she is given whatever we have available, and in turn a bill goes out to you.  This process ends up causing frustration and at times an unhappy student.  Please adhere to the cut-off date that is stated on your menu.  Thanks!  And please visit our website:  http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/foodservices/

Out of District Policy Statement 2008

Out-of-District placements for students who wish to attend a school in Newton other than his/her district school are limited.  Such placements are made on a space available basis only.  Newton families, as well as members of Units A, B, C, D, E, NESA, Custodians and Boston parents of students participating in the METCO Program, should call the Attendance Office at 617-559-6030 for information.  Students who receive acceptance for Out-of-District placement must remain in the school selected or file for out-of-district placement at the appropriate time.  Applications for the following school year must be submitted on forms, which are currently available in the Attendance Office at the Education Center. If necessary, a lottery will be implemented to determine the order in which placements will be made.  Completed applications, signed by the in-district principal, can be submitted no earlier than January 2, 2008 and no later than April 30, 2008.  Applications submitted after April 30, 2008 will not be included in the lottery.  Hand-delivered applications will only be accepted from the parent or legal guardian.  Application forms must have the 'Reason for Request' section completed in order to be considered.  Class size in a given grade, in a given year, in a specific school, may preclude any placements including siblings. Parents will be responsible for transportation. Tuition Free Enrollment is limited to the per pupil cost of regular education.

FUNDRAISING

Campaign for Cabot

We wish to send a heartfelt thank you to all the families who have supported the PTO by contributing to this year’s Campaign for Cabot.  So far 35% of families have contributed, so we are requesting that those of you who have not yet made a contribution please consider supporting our largest fundraiser of the year.  No matter what you contribute, please help us reach our goal of 100% participation.  We need everyone to contribute, either large or small to help us meet our financial goal of $29,000 this year to pay for all the wonderful programming and support the PTO provides.

Box Tops

Please keep brining in Box Tops and place them in the bright pink box in the front lobby. The Cabot PTO received a check for $355.37 for our most recent submission.  Thank you to all the families who brought in Box Tops and the ten families who shopped on-line through the Box Tops Marketplace website.  Please keep brining in the Box Tops and remember to start your on line shopping at: http://cabotpto.org/shop/index.html

SOCIAL ACTION

Please Bring Your Newton Food Pantry Donations to The Cabot Family Dance

The Social Action Committee will be collecting non-perishable food items for the food pantry in Newton at the Cabot Family Dance on February 2nd.  The Newton Food Pantry has a particular need for the following foods:   Canned fruit, meals in a can (stews w/ meat, beef ravioli, spaghetti and meat balls, etc.), canned vegetables (especially peas and beets), and peanut butter

Please donate "regular" size jars/bottles of food, which are about the 14-16 ounces; the family size/extra large cans are too large to store on the Food Pantry shelves.  If you have any questions about donations, please contact Isabelle Thacker (617/795-2332 or isabelle at thackers.net) or Sue Klapisch (617/332-2922 or sklapisch at yahoo.com

Think Recycle

Please keep brining in your old cell phones and used laser and ink jet cartridges and place them in the big green box in the front lobby.  The PTO will ship them off to be recycled properly.

Questions: contact Isabelle Thacker, 617/795-2332, isabelle at thackers.net

Reaching Out to Our Somerville Neighbors: A School Destroyed by an Overnight Fire

As some of you may be aware, on December 9, 2007, the East Somerville Community School, a public K - 8 public school in Somerville, MA was destroyed by an overnight fire. While no one was injured, the school building was damaged beyond any kind of immediate repair. The students and teachers have all been moved to three different locations around Somerville. Most of the school computers, equipment, and other resources have to be replaced.

Our contact in the Somerville public schools has indicated that one of the best ways for interested folks to support the restoration of a safe, enriching, and high quality learning environment for the displaced students is to attend the SPS' upcoming benefit, being sponsored by the Somerville Chamber of Commerce.  It will take place on Thursday, January 17th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn at 30 Washington St. in Somerville.  There will be live entertainment by a dance band and a blues band, a free appetizer buffet from the best local restaurants, and best of all, the knowledge that your participation will help the displaced students and teachers.  Admission is by donation of any amount, although a $25 donation is recommended.  Checks made out to the Somerville Public Schools will be accepted at the door. For more information, please contact Meredith Marks at the Somerville Chamber of Commerce at (617) 776-4100 or at Meredith at somervillechamber.org

Holiday Gift Drive to The Second Step

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Community Service Gift Drive for Second Step.  All of your generous gifts made the Gift Drive a great success.  We filled our lists of assigned gifts and we had many extra gifts donated to fill the needs of additional families.  Also, thank you to all of our volunteers that came and helped collect and check in gifts in the Cabot School lobby, and to the teachers for distributing the flyers back and forth to their classes.   Because of all of you the Gift Drive was once again a great success!  The PTO thanks Rose Coppola-Flynn for all her effort and time spent organizing this gift drive.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

SNEAKER REMINDER

As Physical Educators, we want your child to reach their goals, learn and have fun in a safe environment.  This summer the gymnasium floor was sealed to protect the wood.

In order to ensure that your child obtains maximum benefit and participation in their Physical Education, Health and Wellness classes, we need to reinforce that all students wear sneakers for every PEHW class throughout the year.  We also need to maintain the quality of the gym floor.  Boots, shoes, sandals, Crocs and other footwear are unsafe for your child to wear in this physical environment and may also damage the floor surface.

Again, your child will be required to wear sneakers in order to participate in Physical Education, Health and Wellness classes.  If they fail to wear them to class, they will not be permitted to participate in any activity that day.  If the activity is such that we feel they may be safely involved, we will let them join in.  If unsafe footwear is consistently worn on PEHW days, we will send reminders home with your child.  If your child usually wears shoes or boots to school, please send their sneakers along with them in their backpacks.

SAFE SNEAKER CRITERIA:

•regular heels and soles only - no "high-heeled" or "platform" sneakers

•the laces and/or velcro should fasten sneakers securely to the foot (sneakers will not fly off feet while child is moving)

•soles are intact - no holes or rips

•"hiking boots" do not qualify as sneakers - hooks damage equipment, floor and students

•sneakers should adequately fit your child's feet

Physical Education, Health and Wellness Schedule

First Grade – Thursdays and Fridays

Second Grade – Tuesdays (2S, 2W), Wednesdays (2M, 2L) and Fridays (all 4 2nd grades)

Third Grade – Tuesdays (3V, 3VE, 3T) Wednesday (3B)  and Fridays (ALL)

Jump Rope For Heart

Our school is participating in our 5th annual Jump Rope For Heart program in physical education class. This is a very special community service program to help raise funds for the American Heart Association. We’re joining the fight against our nation’s number 1 and number 3 killers – cardiovascular disease and stroke. Every student at Cabot school will participate in jumping rope for the month of January in P.E. class. Your student will bring home an American Heart Association envelope to collect donations for this cause from family and friends. However, I ask that your student not go door to door or ask strangers for donations. If your child receives any cash donations please convert those to a check prior to turning in the collection envelope. All checks should be payable to the American Heart Association. The deadline for your student’s collection envelope to be turned into Ms. Bennett is January 31, 2008. Last year as a community we raised $5,839.61 we received a portion of this to buy physical education equipment. This year our goal is 6,000!!!

Jump Rope For Heart is a fun event that helps our children understand the importance of community service and physical activity while helping save lives. Our efforts truly make a difference!

Registration is underway for the winter session of Newton Community Education. In addition to the classes listed in our NewKids flyer which has gone home in all your kids' backpacks, we've added a science club for girls, run by "Wicked Cool for Kids." This class is offered at Zervas on Wednesdays and Peirce on Thursdays, starting the week of February 25, right after February vacation. In this class kids will create their own bath and beauty products using chemistry. They'll make their own lip
gloss, lotions, soap, bath salts, and fizzy tints. They'll also dig deep into the world of geology and make a beautiful rock display, then learn to make crystals, and select polished stones to make jewelry. The class is for kids in grades 1-4. Tuition is $120 for this eight-week session.

Please visit our website at newtoncommunityed.org for the complete listing of our winter classes. Or you can call us at 617-559-6999 for information or to register. Our summer program is now complete and a flyer will be coming home soon. Call 617-559-6995 for details.
