Dear Cabot Community,

As we anticipate the start of the 2007-08 school year we want to alert you to some changes regarding parking and traffic flow around Cabot School.   The Newton Traffic Council met on June 28th and made some changes to increase safety around our school.

The new traffic regulations are:

Ø       Parkview Ave. is now a one-way street at all times.

Ø       Bridges Avenue is now a one way street going North on Bridges Ave, (toward Norwood).  Parking will still be allowed on the West side of Bridges Avenue, but cars will now face North instead of South.

Ø       Both of these changes have been initiated on a trial basis from August 1 – October 1, 2007.  At that point the Traffic Council will reconvene to determine if these regulations will be permanent. To see a full report of the Traffic Council minutes, visit the following website and check the report dated 6/28/07.:  http://www.ci.newton.ma.us/Aldermen/Agendas/TrafficAgenda.htm

Additionally:

Ø       Please allow teachers to exclusively park on the field side of Parkview Avenue from the top of the street down to the K-Wing of Cabot.  We would like to unofficially designate this area as faculty parking only. Please allow our teachers convenient parking as many of their spots have been taken by the addition of the 2 new modular classrooms.

When parking around Cabot, please remember:

There is no parking on the West side (the side along the houses) of Parkview Avenue.

Do not let your children off in the faculty parking lot, this is not safe.

Do not block any driveway.  The law states that you must leave at least 5 feet away from a driveway when parking.

Follow the Blue Zone Rules.  This is a moving lane used for drop off and pick-up only.  Cars should pull up to the top of the lane and should not be stopped for any time longer than to drop off or pick-up a child.  Please circle around the block and until you see your child(ren).

Please consider the following to help reduce traffic:

When driving, please consider parking on near by streets and walking to help alleviate traffic congestion and increase safety.  The following streets have ample parking and are very convenient to the school:

East Side Parkway  •   Winchester Road • Westchester Road • Blake Street • Clarendon Street  • Withington Road

Again, please remember to never block a driveway and respect the 5 foot rule when parking on any street.

If you are eligible, take the school bus!  Don’t know if you are eligible? Check the website http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/transportation/schedules05_06.html

Join the walking school bus – and volunteer to be a driver 1 day a week!  Right now we have 2 routes  - one from the Surrey Road area and one from the Morse Road area.  Depending upon the number of volunteers, we may be able to add more routes.

Together, with your help, we can keep the roads safe for our children, reduce parking problems for the teachers, and provide convenient drop off and pick up for the parents. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and assistance in achieving these goals!

Respectfully Yours,
