Results of Architects' Study will be Announced on June 11th
A team of architects has assessed the condition of 21 Newton Public School
buildings and will report its findings at the School Committee meeting on
Monday night, June 11, 2007. Tune in to find out which schools have been
identified as the most in need of attention - has Cabot School made it to
the top of the list for renovations?
Please attend the meeting if you can -- it starts at 7:30 p.m. at the
Education Center on Walnut St. - or watch the meeting live (or later) on
NewTV. As always, a good showing of Cabot parents will remind our elected
officials of how much we care about the future of our building and
community. We expect the School Committee to schedule one or two public
hearings on the report, but those dates have not been announced yet. Those
meetings are likely to be in June and will be another crucial time for us to
voice our concern about taking care of Cabot School.
A copy of the study itself should be available on June 11th on the NPS
website: http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/schoolcommittee/index.html

Schools out for Summer! Celebrate the End of the School Year with a Picnic
on Cabot Field
School finishes on Wednesday, June 20th at 12 noon. In recent years a
tradition has evolved at Cabot to mark this event with a mass picnic out on
the Cabot field. So come along. Bring your blanket, a picnic and hang out
with friends you have made over the year and discover new ones!
NEWTON SCHOOL'S GIFT POLICY
As we reach the end of the year please remember the Newton School Committee
Policy: "No teacher in the performance of regular duties shall receive
presents from the pupils under his or her direction." Each year families
are reminded of this policy, and each year most families comply. It is very
natural for children and their families to want to acknowledge and thank
their teachers at the end of the year.
Here are some suggestions:
* A note of appreciation to your child's teacher, or a card made by
your child, would be treasured.
* A homemade acknowledgement to your child's teacher or faculty
member, such as cookies or baked goods.
* Honor your child's teacher with a contribution to the Newton Schools
Foundation - every teacher gets mentioned in the TAB! For more details go to
http://www.nsfonline.org/support/honorteacher2007.html
Please do not solicit money from families for class gifts. If you need
further clarification please speak with the Principal Marilynne Quarcoo or
your PTO Co-Presidents, Jo Doherty and Mary Kathryn Fallon. Thank you for
your cooperation.
All Aboard The Magic Cabot School Bus!
Thanks to all those new eligible families who rode the bus on the Ride The
Bus to School Day May 18th. If you would like your children to continue to
ride the bus for the remainder of the school year then please contact the
office to obtain a green information sheet that needs to be filled out. This
provides the school with information as to which days your children will be
riding the bus etc,..
Safe Routes to School - Join The Walking Bus!

In anticipation of more traffic congestion next year, we are trying to
establish 2 walking school bus routes to Cabot. Working with the Safe
Routes to School Program, we will be sending out permission slips and let
you know if there is one in your area. If you are interested in helping
out, or being a parent walking volunteer (hopefully just 1 day per week),
please contact either Mary Kathryn Fallon, marykathf at aol.com or Liz Haas,
haasjoffe at rcn.com. Thanks!
CABOT ARTWORK AT SHAWS SUPERMARKET
Check out artwork by Cabot students on display at Shaw's Supermarket in
Newtonville this month. Stop by this week and next to see Chinese brushwork
created by second graders; in early June, look for ladybugs painted by
kindergartners. The art should be on display on your right as you ascend the
escalator. Thanks to Ms. Straight and Ms. Cain, Cabot School; and Mr.
Therrien, Shaw's Supermarket, for collaborating on this project.

GCKS Fall Soccer Registration begins June 11th
Registration for the Fall Session of Garden City Kindergarten Soccer begins
Mon, Jun 11th. We have two programs, a K Soccer league for children
enrolled in Kindergarten and a Pre-K Soccer league for children 4 to 5 years
old. GCKS provides a great introduction to the game of soccer; teaching a
variety of basic skills in a fun, non-competitive environment. Team sizes
are small, with 10 players in each group. We will only enroll 80 children
per league. This format allows each child optimal time for on-field practice
and game rotations.
GCKS Fall Session runs from Sept 8-Nov 3rd. Practice/games will be held
Saturdays from 9:30-10:30 am for the Kindergarten league and 10:45-11:45 am
for the Pre-K league. Games are played on the field at Burr School, Pine
Street in Auburndale. Volunteer parent coaches are needed. No experience is
necessary and training will be provided.
Cost is $60 per child for the season. GCKS is a joint venture of
Lincoln-Eliot & Franklin School's Parent Teacher Organization. Proceeds
benefit both schools PTO programs. To obtain a registration form, send an
email to gardencitysoccer at gmail.com or call L-E School parent Melanie Varady
at 617-244-5773 or Franklin School parent Deb Rooney at (617) 630-8520.
Space is limited. Registration deadline is Friday, August 17th.
