Problem #7
1. Cabot School is planning a core values assembly on May 3. During the
assembly, students will hang up all of the letters in Cabot's core values on
one or more lengths of clothesline. Each individual letter is written on a
piece of poster board that measures 18" across.
Here are the core values:
LIFE LONG LEARNERS
RESPECT FOR SELF AND OTHERS
COMMITMENT TO SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY
a. How many poster boards with letters will be hung?
b. Ms. Bennett has measured the length of the gym. It is 58.5 feet long.
At least 2" inch must be left between each letter. At least 5" must be left
between each word. How much clothesline is needed to hang all of the
letters?
c. In order to hang all of the letters, will they need to use more than one
piece of cloths line? If yes, how many clotheslines will they need to get?
d. How much exposed cloths line (line with no letters hanging on it) with
there be, after the students have hung up all of the letters?
e. Draw a diagram of how you would set up the gym (use a separate piece of
paper).
2. Jack and Jill were practicing batting. Jack's first time at bat, he hit
75 out of a hundred pitches thrown by Jill. Then Jill hit 75 out of a
hundred pitches thrown by Jack. After a little break, Jack took a second
turn at bat. Jill threw him 50 pitches, and he hit 35 of them. Jill was
tired, so she didn't take a second turn at bat. Who had the best average for
the day - Jack or Jill?
