 UPCOMING EVENTS:
Cabot Fair

It’s finally here – the Annual Cabot Fair – fun for the whole family. Come on out this Saturday,

May5th, from 10:00 – 3:00 and join the Cabot Community. The weather promises to be perfect!

Come ride the rides, play fun games, dunk a teacher in the dunk tank, ride the ponies, get your face

painted, send a candy gram, win prizes and hang out with friends! Many thanks to Sue Sagan and

Laura Dreese, the chairs of the Fair for all their hard work!

Raffle Tickets – Don’t forget to sell you raffle tickets! There are many, many prizes to win for raffle ticket holders and you do not need to be present to win. There are also awesome prizes for the students who sell tickets. Anyone who sells a ticket will have the chance to win a cool bike (have you seen us with it in the mornings?) donated by Farina Bike Shop, a $100 gift certificate to Toys’R’Us and more. Remember, the classroom which sells the most tickets will win a special prize! All tickets need to be returned by 3:00 PM on Friday May 4th. All tickets received after that time will be eligible for the raffle, but not counted toward the contest.
Bake Sale - Bring your specialty.. brownies, cookies, cupcakes, muffins, pies, fudge, seven layer bars, breads and more… just remember to wrap your baked goods individually and please avoid nuts, cream cheese, whipped cream or anything perishable. Please call Carolyn Eggert at 617-630-1501 or email at carolyneggert at yahoo.com if you would like to bake. Thanks!
Yard Sale - This year there will be a Yard Sale at the Fair - We will be selling toys, books and videos, and small housewares (no furniture or large items). Items should be in good condition and have all pieces/parts. DO YOU HAVE THINGS TO DONATE? If you do please send a quick email to Deb Klein Deb.Klein at ApproachGroup.com and give her a rough idea of what you might bring (e.g a box of kids books, or 2 toddler toys) so that we can have enough space for your things at the Sale.
Love to cook? Delicious food needed for Staff Appreciation Luncheon on May 8!
Let’s show our gratitude for all of the effort Cabot’s teachers and staff make on our children’s behalf. Lend a hand with the PTO’s Staff Appreciation Luncheon, scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, at 12:45 p.m. If you can help with food (8-10 servings of a homemade dish), set up, or clean up, please contact Sally Brickell (Acknowledgment Committee) at brickland6 at rcn.com or 617-527-5438.

Cabot Clean-Up Day
Have you noticed some changes at Cabot School this week? We hope so, because over 140 people rolled up their sleeves to pitch in and Clean-up Cabot! Jo & I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to each and every one of you for your efforts. We can't even begin to express our gratitude for all your hard work. Cabot School was cleaned-up big time! Here is a sample of projects completed: Cleaned & painted the 3rd floor, 2nd floor, and 1st floor girl’s bathrooms; cleaned & painted the 2nd floor and 1st floor boy’s bathrooms; cleaned (actually scrubbed) both K bathrooms and faculty bathrooms; wiped down the chairs, tables and cubbie in Mrs. Cain’s room; sanded and painted the benches outside Mr. Miller’s classroom; painted the large bulletin board in Mr. Ripp’s bathroom; organized Mr. Tirrell’s library by genre and put up a number line and a 100 chart in his room; sanded and painted 2 bookshelves and hung shelves in Ms. Milham’s room; we cleaned the gym mats as requested by Ms. Bennett; we painted the wall enclosure around the new wall in the literacy center for Ms. Nelson; we planed the doors and fixed them so they would shut; we hung shelves in the learning center for Ms. Sayre and the nurses’ office for Ms. Kerrigan; we moved a counter from the Learning Center to the teacher’s lounge; we fixed the cement steps outside the K wing; we put in doors stop, and fixed a faucet, we planted, weeded and mulched.

We were thrilled with the amount of volunteers and the level of work. No matter what we asked you to do, no matter how dirty the job, we received a 'sure, no problem'. Thank you.

We appreciate EVERYONE'S help, but must recognize a few individuals who went above and beyond:
Thank you to Jim Robertson for helping us determine what supplies we needed, donating all the supplies and for coordinating the deliveries.
Thank you to Martin Buckton, our foreman for the day, who's skill and expertise completed many jobs which were far beyond our capabilities, including fixing the cement steps outside the K-wing, hanging shelves, replacing broken screens and helping direct the 'big jobs'.
Thanks to Jack McQuade, Joel Lerher and Mark Nardone for their expertise fixing doors, hanging shelves, installing door stops and other jobs.
Thank you to Mark Geffen - a new member of Cabot Community, who rolled up his sleeves on both days to hang shelves, put up a counter in the teachers lounge, help Martin with the larger jobs and painting.
Thank you to Portia Reece and Tyriq Franklin-Reece who stayed for the entire day and cleaned and painted the 2nd floor boys bathroom.
Thank you to Anya Bassett who organized the outdoor portion of NewtonServes and to Margaret Wazuka for going out and purchasing all the plants.
We are in gratitude to all those listed below for their help. We are also grateful to all the families who shared their spouses, children, sisters and brothers with us this weekend

Classroom Placement Procedures

Please refer to the Principal’s Blue Sheet sent home last week regarding classroom placement

procedures. Parents sometimes feel the need to share information to assist in the complex process

of placement. If you would like to do this, you MUST use the form provided on the blue sheet. If

you need an additional copy of the blue sheet, please ask Mrs. Driscoll in the office.

Playground Update – A work order has been submitted to the City to repair the broken support beam on the slide. We have been in contact with the City and will keep you updated on the repair! Thanks for your patience.

Save the Date – Have you been thinking about sending your children to Cabot on the bus, (and reducing traffic congestion at the same time)? Well, Friday May 18th will be ‘Ride the Bus Day’ for all eligible students. If you live outside of the 1 mile radius around Cabot School your child is eligible to take the bus at no charge. More information to follow!

4TH GRADE SALE OF ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHT BULBS
Our 4th Grade students sold approximately $1,600 worth of energy efficient light bulbs. Thanks to the 4th Grade for making a difference and learning about how to protect our environment. All proceeds generated will be donated to an environmentally friendly cause.

What’s The Big Idea Expo Sponsored by the Newton Schools Foundation
Tuesday May 8, 2007 4:30 – 7:30 PM Newton South High School Cafeteria
This is a new event that Newton Schools Foundation (NSF) is sponsoring. NSF raises money for our public school system as a whole and uses the money to provide grants to Newton teachers who are creating innovative programs for our students. Some of the teachers at Cabot have received and used such grants. The expo will give attendees a fun chance to see how donors’ money is being used and what new projects teachers and students are working on. The expo will take place in the Newton South High School cafeteria on Tuesday, May 8, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
