Placement Process and Changes for Parents
As we approach May, some of the attention of the faculty turns
to next year. We recently received our allocation of twenty-two classroom
teaching positions. Most of you are probably aware that we will be adding
two additional modular classrooms to the school to accommodate the
anticipated student enrollment. We anticipate that our enrollment will be
close to 441 students in September. We just keep growing larger!
Last year, we made a change in the notification process to parents. Class
list will be distributed after school is out based on a timetable confirmed
by Superintendent Jeff Young in consultation w the Newton School Committee.
Parents sometimes feel the need to share information to assist in the
complex process of placement. Most parents do not need to write letters but
if you choose to provide written information about your child or family,
please follow the prescribed guidelines. This year a form will be provided
in the BLUE SHEET. All submissions MUST be made on this form. The form will
be made available in your child’s backpack on Thursday, April 26th.
Many schools now use this form and I believe this format makes any
information submitted by parents more consistent and focused on information
that may help inform the process.
If you submit a letter in another format or reference teacher preference or
concern, the letter will not be included in our grade level deliberations
and will be returned to you. Any digression from these guidelines only
interferes with our ability to make equitable decisions about each child’s
placement. If you do not follow these guidelines your submission will not
be considered.
Most parents have regular ongoing contact with the teacher and this
relationship works to ensure that the most current knowledge about your
child and their needs is brought to the attention of all involved in the
placement process.
Please keep in mind that it is not possible for me to schedule meetings with
parents and guardians regarding placement. The May parent/teacher
conferences are designed primarily for the teacher to share information
about your child’s progress in preparation for the final progress report.
Please use that meeting to gather information about your child’s progress
in meeting grade level benchmarks.
The faculty and I thoughtfully review all the information we have about all
students during each grade level placement meeting. Please do not put highly
confidential information on the form that cannot be shared during our
meetings. Teachers will start this important work in mid to late May through
early June. It is a time consuming process and we appreciate your respect
for our need to be fair to all children’s needs
Requests for friendships are considered but are not guaranteed. In some
cases, these groupings interfere in establishing optimum learning
conditions. At all grades, our goal is to create an environment where all
children learn to develop positive and constructive interpersonal skills and
relationships with their peers while maintaining optimum learning
conditions.
Please note if after receiving a letter I feel a conversation is
necessary, I will contact you.
It is extremely important for parents who choose to complete this form, to
do so by the May 7th.

We hope this week that you are able to return to school invigorated after
the Spring Break vacation! The glorious weather that welcomed us back to
school reminds us that spring is around the corner. There are always lots of
great events and happenings at Cabot to enjoy from now until the end of the
school year. The Cabot Fair, Clean up Cabot, Teacher Appreciation lunch and
Color Day to name just a few. And of course, these great occasions could not
happen without YOU! So our thanks to those who have already stepped forward
to volunteer at one, some or all. To those who might not have had the
opportunity to do so we say come and join us! Take a look at our emails for
information on where & when help is needed. Everyone giving just a little of
their time makes these events memorable and something for all our children
to enjoy!
The recent Book Fair was a great reminder of how important and special
reading is to all of us. This year’s event celebrated reading and
story-telling using some in-house talents. Our thanks go to Lisa Porter and
Lani Gerson who organized this enjoyable evening. We also look forward to
seeing many of you this weekend as we work to clean up as much of our school
as we can. So if you are available come on down to Cabot and join us!
And finally we appreciate all of you who took the time to complete the
online traffic and fundraising survey. We hope to be in a position to
provide you with a summary of results sometime next week.
Enjoy the weather while it lasts!

School Council Nominations
As part of the Education Reform Act of 1993, School Councils were mandated
for each school across the Commonwealth. The Council offers a way for
parents, teachers, and community members to work together in an advisory
capacity to the Principal to identify educational needs, set educational
goals, review the school building budget, and prepare the school improvement
plan. The Council consists of the Principal, up to two appointed community
members who are not Cabot School parents, and an equal number of teachers
and parents, representing our diverse school community. The parent
representatives are elected by Cabot parents.
Nominations for three parent representative positions are now open. Each
newly elected parent member will serve a two-year term of office. The Cabot
School Council meets usually Monday evenings 5-7pm, 8 times during the
school year and members are expected to attend 80% of the meetings.
Frequently subcommittees are formed to research and provide recommendations
about a variety of school improvement issues.

Library
Fourth, fifth and sixth grade children from throughout Massachusetts voted
for their favorite book from a master list of twenty-five eligible books.
The 2007 MCBA Winner is The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo and the
honor books are The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau, Al Capone Does My Shirts
by
Gennifer Choldenko, Among the Betrayed by Margaret Peterson Haddix and
Thunder From the Sea by Joan Ferris.
Fifty Cabot 4th and 5th grade students fully participated in the program,
reading at least five of the eligible books from the list. The winner of
the Cabot vote was The City of Ember by Duprau with Al Capone Does My Shirts
by Choldenko and Thunder from the Sea by Ferris tying for second place.
Congratulations to all students who participated in this annual reading
program!
It is interesting to note that The City of Ember is science fiction with a
definite environmental sensibility and Al Capone Does My Shirts and Thunder
from the Sea are historical fiction. Could it be that Cabot students are
branching out from the always-popular fantasy reading!?

As a state-mandated assessment of physical growth and development, the
Newton Public Schools measure height and weight for students in Kindergarten
and grades 1, 3, and 4, 7 and 9. These measurements are used to calculate
body mass index (BMI) and a BMI percentile based on age and gender. BMI is a
screening tool that provides a guideline for determining whether a child is
underweight, overweight, at risk of overweight or at a healthy weight. The
growth exam screening has been done on grades K, 1, 3, and 4. If you would
like to see your child's results or receive additional information and
resources, please contact me at 617- 559- 9404.

Cabot Core Values
How can we bring Cabot School’s core values
* Life-long learners
* Respect for self and others
* Commitment to school and community
to life for students and their families and for faculty and staff? How can
we consistently make these values part of the way we in the Cabot community
conduct ourselves?
At Dr. Quarcoo’s request, a committee of parents and faculty has met
several times to discuss these questions. The faculty is planning an
all-school assembly focused on the core values in May. Students will discuss
the core values in their classrooms both this spring and next fall. We also
thought it would be helpful to write about the core values in the remaining
Jabberwocks of this year. We’ll begin here with Cabot’s first core value,
which reads as follows:
The Cabot School community seeks to create an environment in which all
children become life-long learners by
* mastering a core set of tools, concepts, and skills
* receiving consistent expectations for excellence and rigor
* tackling academic challenges that encourage risk-taking
* using critical and reflective thinking processes
* understanding the link between effort and achievement
* developing the ability to analyze one’s success and effort
* understanding the process of learning and various learning styles
* experiencing a variety of learning paths and opportunities
* celebrating learning
We want our children to develop a love of learning and to understand, as
they say at Cabot, that we can work hard to get smart. How can we reinforce
this value with our children at home? We can talk about what we adults are
studying (books we’re reading, training courses at work, committee work,
classes we’re taking) and how we’re working to learn the material. When we
visit museums or attend concerts, sports events, and the like, we can talk
about what we’re learning and what we want to know more about. We can talk
about new things we’re interested in learning. We can take our children to
the library to pursue areas of interest. Before traveling with children, we
can research our destination together. When we do these things, we model
life-long learning.
If you have thoughts or questions about Cabot’s core values, please speak
with any of the parent committee members: Sally Brickell, Jenny Duvall, Lisa
Griggs, Tracy Martin, Sandee Simshauser, and Isabelle Thacker.
CASP
CASP Annual Meeting/Coffee House will be held on Wednesday, April 25 from 5:
30-7:30 P.M. in the Cabot Gym. The Annual Meeting will begin promptly at 5:
30 and it is important to have 65 current families in attendance to make up
a quorum. The meeting will focus on the election of next years Board of
Directors, whose bio’s are posted on the CASP bulletin Board in addition to
voting on questions focusing on longer-term issues: 1) whether CASP should
ratify in the form of a written policy its commitment to giving first
priority to all currently enrolled children, as has been historic practice;
(2) how to cut enrollment in the event of unforeseen circumstances
(possibilities include by lottery, as recommended by the space/enrollment
committee, by lottery weighted by usage, by 5/4/3/2-day prioritization or by
working parents); (3) whether the Board should re-consider different
enrollment priorities for working versus non-working parents; and (4)
whether the Board should look for off-site space to try to accommodate all
children, rather than limiting enrollment.
The Coffee House portion of the evening will be held from 6:30-7:30 P.M. A
free will donation is suggested at the door. Proceeds from this event will
go towards the scholarship fund for 2007-2008.
