Modern Dads: How Men’s Lives Are Changing and Why It Matters to Families

Drawing on his work with thousands of dads across America and abroad, his cutting-edge research and scenes from his documentary films, John Badalament will present both a snapshot of fatherhood today and a call to action for men and women. His presentation will:
Describe “The 5 Practices of a Modern Dad” (Understanding his legacy, Connecting emotionally, Showing up physically, Engaging in youth culture, and Challenging stereotypical manhood)
Review the current research about how fathers impact boys’ and girls’ lives academically, cognitively, and emotionally.
Teach practical relationship skills so men can deepen their relationships with their children and those they love.
Show what women/mothers can do to support and challenge fathers & father-figures to use “The 5 Practices of a Modern Dad.”
Provide insight into pressing issues facing families, such as coping with media influence and balancing work/family.
Describe the importance of dads’ involvement in schools beyond attending sports events.
John Badalament, Ed.M., lectures internationally. His documentary film, All Men Are Sons, aired nationally on PBS. John is a graduate of Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. He is currently writing a book about fatherhood. For more info, see www.johnbadalament.com.
