This morning’s PTO Meeting & Coffee – November 13, 2007

Thanks to many parents for joining us in the Library PTO
meeting and Coffee.  We discussed upcoming events, programs and a
financial update.  Look for notices for next PTO meeting, which will be
next year.  See you there!

School
Committee Meeting – Tonight, November 13, 2007

This
Tuesday's (tonight) School Committee meeting will include a vote on the long
term facility planning for a new school for Angier and a discussion of
short-term needs (looking at September 2008).  The six schools in the
discussion are:  Angier, Bowen, Burr, Franklin, Lincoln-Eliot and
Mason-Rice. Jeff Young will present his recommendations at the meeting on
November 26th; the School Committee will then vote on them at the December 10th
meeting. The meetings usually start at 7:30 p.m., in Room 210 at the Education Center.  The supporting material
for the meeting is available on the website usually a few days before.
The meetings start and end with public comments.

Papa Ginos Fundraiser – Tomorrow Evening,November 14th!

Don’t worry about cooking on Wednesday November 14th – head out to Papa Ginos!  Between the hours of 4 -9:00pm,
Papa Ginos will donate 20% of your purchase price to the Cabot PTO.  Either dine in or pick up at Papa Gino's on
Watertown Street (Stop and Shop Plaza) on Wednesday, November 14th.  Look for the Papa Gino's flyer that will
come home in folders soon.  The flyer you received must be presented when you pay for your food in order for
Cabot School to benefit from your purchase and you must mention your purchase is for the Cabot School
Fundraiser.  Grab your pizza, feed the family, while having fun at the same time!  Any questions?  Contact
Julie Stonehill at jastonehill at rcn.com.  See you at Papa's!

Date AND TIME Change - Mark your calendar!! Autumn Fest
now will be on Monday November 19th at 10:00AM

Please note the date and time change of this year’s Autumn
Fest.  We had to change the traditional Tuesday date of Autumn Fest to
Monday due a City of Newton
mandatory professional development day for Music Faculty.  Please mark your
calendars!  Check the Cabot PTO calendar at www.cabotpto.org
for an updated calendar at anytime.

Campaign For Cabot is Here!!!

We are pleased to inform you that the annual
Campaign for Cabot 2007-2008 is officially launched. You will be receiving a
letter in the mail with all the details.
Some of the new families have already started receiving an introductory
letter describing this fundraiser. We hope you will be able to participate in this important
event for our school and help us make a difference.

Cabot’s Annual Food Drive

Cabot’s
Annual food drive will start next week.
The members of Social Action Committee will be collecting food and
delivering it to food pantry in the city.
More information will be sent home with collection details.

CABOT-WIDE COMMUNITY SERVICE
PROJECT

This
year, Cabot will participate in the holiday gift drive to benefit the families
of The Second Step (“TSS”), Newton’s
shelter for homeless mothers and their children who have experienced domestic
violence.  TSS serves 16 mothers and
their children in two locations in Newton,
as well as another 100 area families who are not homeless but who need other
types of assistance.  There will be a flyer
with all the details in the backpack of your child (ren).  If you have any questions, please call Rose
Coppola Flynn at 617-332-2573 or email her at roda at gis.net.

ThinkRecycle – A New Initiative

Cabot will once again collect and recycle used print (laser or ink jet) cartridges and old cell phones, through an
organization called Think Recycle. Think Recycle will recycle all types of laser and ink jet cartridges and cell
phones; those that qualify, will earn funds for Cabot.  In addition, Think Recycle will plant one tree through
American Forests for every twelve qualifying cartridge or cell phone we collect. There is a big Think Recycle box
in the front lobby to put used print cartridges and old cell phones. Please put the used print cartridges in a bag
before putting them in the box, so that ink doesn't get all over the cell phones. If you would like to learn more, go
to www.thinkrecycle.com.

I have put a postcard flyer in your mailboxes to be distributed to your students. If you have any questions, feel
free to contact me. Thank you, Isabelle Thacker.

Strategic
Vision sessions - An Invitation from the Superintendent to Participate

A message from Jeff Young, School
Superintendent -  ”For those of you who
have become interested in our strategic planning effort, I  invite
you to participate in one of the parent/community sessions to create a shared
vision for the NPS. Here are the particulars:

·  Session #1:  Tuesday,
November 13, 9:15 - 11:45 a.m. in the Druker Auditorium, Main Branch, Newton Free Library

·  Session #2:  Tuesday,
November 20, 6:45 - 9:15 p.m. in the Newton
 South High
 School Student
 Center

At these sessions, we will build
upon the strengths that have been identified across the system and create a
shared picture of the "envisioned future" for Newton Public Schools
in the year 2020, when this year's kindergartners graduate!  Participants
in these sessions will be invited to work creatively and collaboratively to
brainstorm what they would like to see evident as NPS' key accomplishments and
outstanding qualities at that point in time.  The sessions will be very
interactive and give people a chance to be bold and vivid as they consider the
future they would like to call forward for the district and its various
stakeholders. Please click on the link https://fmweb.newton.k12.ma.us/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=Attendance%20Questioner%20Parents&-startsession&-visibility and take 10 seconds to tell us whether you will attend one
of the sessions.  We need to get some rough idea as to the likely size of
the group.

About 700 parents completed the
electronic survey on “enduring strengths.”  We are now analyzing the data
(from a similar faculty/staff survey as well) and will be ready to report the
results shortly. Thank you for your ongoing interest in this project.” Jeff Young.
