Our thanks go to Cabot parent volunteers Emily Hess & Shara Lewis for
instigating & launching this great new intiative!!

Cabot Math Challenge

Problem #1

Submit by November 16, 2006

Show your work. It is more important than the answer. Submissions that do
not show how you found the solution will not be included.

Showing your work can include an equation, a picture or a written
description.

PROBLEM #1 -- STAIRWAY TO THE ROOF

Cabot School Students have decided to build a stairway to the roof. The
stairway is made of cubes.

The cubes are all 1 foot tall by 1 foot wide by 1 foot deep.

1. How many cubes would be needed to make the stairway 5 steps high?

2. How many cubes would be needed to make the stairway 9 steps high?

3. How many cubes would be needed to make the stairway 45 steps high?

4. If the school is 115 feet high, how many cubes would be needed to build
a stairway that reaches the roof?

5. Can you describe a pattern? Can you find an equation to determine the
number of cubes needed to make a stairway for any given height?
