This message has been prepared by Sarah Ecker, chair of the PTO's Political
Issues Committee. Please take a moment to read this very important message
concerning the lack of space at Cabot School. In doing so you will keep
yourself informed of what decisions will be made by Newton's School
Committee which will directly affect Cabot for the next school year 2007-08.

 

SPACE  CRUNCH ISSUES AT CABOT - WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP!

 

The enrollment at Cabot is higher than it has been in years and we are
running out of classroom space. Enrollment is forecasted to increase next
year as well.

 

The Newton School Committee is evaluating its options for dealing with
overcrowding at Cabot and other elementary schools over the course of
several Monday night meetings this fall.  The schedule is listed below.  The
process will end with a vote by the School Committee on December 11th.

 

We are looking for parents to attend these meetings.  A good turn-out of
Cabot parents is essential:  we need to follow the decision-making process
in order to know when and how to weigh in AND we need to visibly demonstrate
that we are concerned about what happens at Cabot next year.

 

Please contact Sarah Ecker ( sarahecker at comcast.net ) and volunteer to
attend a meeting.  Don't let this effort fall on the shoulders of a few
individuals. 

 

Meetings are at 7:30pm at the Education Center at 100 Walnut St. and
generally last two hours.  You are not expected to speak at the meetings
(just listen), but public comment is permitted at the beginning and the end
of each meeting.

Sept. 25                        Presentation of school inventories,
classroom capacity data, floor plans

Oct. 10                         Enrollment Update including October 2006
official enrollment counts

Oct. 23                         Presentation and discussion of POLICY
OPTIONS for elementary space planning for Sept. 2007 Outline of criteria for
review of options

Oct. 30                         PUBLIC FORUM - School Committee Interactive
Public Forum on Elementary Space for public input on the issues and options

Nov. 13                        School Committee discussion and approval of
policy options for elementary space in 2007

Nov. 27                        Annual Enrollment Analysis Report
presentation and discussion Subcommittee recommendations regarding the
policy options

Dec. 11                        School Committee VOTE on elementary space
policy for 2007-08
