Message from Cabot Principal, Dr. Marilynne Quarcoo
Welcome, Welcome!
Yes, the doors at Cabot School are just about to open! In a matter of days,
we will greet our new and returning students. From all the activity in the
building this past week, I can confidently say that the excitement is
building here! Tuesday is the first official day for faculty and staff. We
spend a great deal of time in meetings. We meet with Superintendent Young
and learn about the district's major initiatives and then we start our work
to build a professional collaborative community. This year, we welcome more
than 20 new personnel to the school. While I would like to list all their
names, let me introduce you to just a few.
We welcome Ms. Patty Fiorenza to grade 5. Ms. Fiorenza comes to us from
Countryside School where she has worked for the past four years in grade 4.
Ms. Fiorenza has already gotten herself comfortable at the school and is
sure to bring a wealth of knowledge, skills, and compassion to her work. Mr.
Amaya Rashad Adams is the newest grade 4 teacher on the team. Mr. Adams
recently taught grade 4 in a suburban district in Virginia. He was a much
sought after candidate in our district but Cabot School's reputation and
warm welcoming faculty lured him to 229 Cabot Street. Mr. Adams brings his
experiences as a conscientious, principled and well-trained teacher to our
community. Finally, we welcome Ms. Elizabeth Stahl to grade 2. Ms. Stahl has
been in and out of school most of the summer. She hails most recently from
the Cambridge Friends School where she taught first grade. Ms. Stahl has
impressed us with her depth of insight regarding young learners and her
knowledge about the variety of ways in which they learn. Her classroom
started with bare bones and she continues to create a sound structure to
support the excitement that comes when guiding the growth and development of
children.
In the next letter, I will highlight our new specialists and all the support
staff that make up Team Cabot!
As we open the doors next Thursday, you will note a few changes, if you are
a returning family! Given the 30 or so additional students and the
additional classes at grades 2 and 5, we are getting pretty full. The narrow
hallways are now the residence for essential school equipment including our
copying machines and audio-visual equipment. You may not be aware that with
the loss of a full size teacher's workroom and lunch room, loads of
equipments has been downsized, surplused and relocated to more public
spaces. The faculty and I are concerned, as teachers need a place to do
their work. We are struggling with how to keep the building accessible yet
relatively clear and safe so their work can happen. In the first few weeks
of school, we will begin to assess our entry and dismissal guidelines and
makes adjustments to support some reasonableness regarding these procedures
for the community.
A school should offer a vibrant environment that honors all members of the
community. Arriving at a balance between meeting the needs of teachers to do
their work, the needs of students to feel at ease to navigate a familiar
environment and be independent, and the needs of the community to feel
welcomed will be one of our major efforts this first month. In that light,
we start by asking parents to leave all strollers and other such items
outside. Please secure these items in traffic free areas near our entrances.
Bikes and other wheeled equipment. Scooters, roller blades, heelies, etc
have not been permitted at school for sometime due to outside congestion.
Your adherence to these requests will go a long way in making our days go
well.
To keep this first letter upbeat, I invite you to come out on Tuesday for
the Welcoming Family Picnic or to just stop by the office to say hello and
welcome back! The days of summer at first seem so many but as time proceeds,
the fond thoughts of life in the Cabot community come to mind and I start to
look forward to days filled with children and adults engaged in a
partnership that in my opinion is the best partnership in the world! Your
child is a special and unique human being and our pleasure is found in doing
our best work on their behalf!
I look forward to giving each of you hardy and warm welcome!
See you real soon.
Sincerely,
Dr. Marilynne Smith Quarcoo
