| Principal's Message |
All of the Cabot staff and a significant number of parents took me up on my offer to meet and talk about the school. In virtually every conversation, I have been impressed with how positive this community is about the Cabot School. Here is what I have discovered so far after almost three weeks of school: Cabot fulfills the three C's (civility, cordiality, and collegiality) The collective social development of the students is extremely important to the staff and to you, the parents, and that commitment shows itself in how children behave in the common areas: hallways, playground, and even how they interact with me, the principal. Children are engaged in the classroom as they practice routines, both academic and behavioral which will prepare them for deep learning and complex thinking as the school year unfolds.
I believe that the staff and you, the parents, both in action and interaction, embody our core values: respect for self and others, commitment to school and community, and life-long learners. This year our staff, in particular is dedicated to a concept called "professional learning communities." Teams of teachers will meet regularly to work collaboratively in an ongoing process of collective inquiry and reflection in order to achieve better results in the classroom. In simpler terms, teachers will now have the time to examine and hopefully improve not only their teaching but the learning which goes on in the classroom. To this end, our work will be shaped by four essential questions about learning:
What is it we expect our students to learn? How will we know when they have learned it? How will we respond when they don't learn it? How will respond when they already know it?
Please take a look at the following cartoon. In its simple, yet profound way, it reveals the essential dilemma which we at Cabot face every day. As educators, we know this: For a school to be educationally successful where students learn and succeed at the highest level, it must be a community of professionals working together toward a vision of teaching and learning which transcends individual classrooms. Successful schools are places where adults work together collaboratively, without hierarchal status, to answer those four questions of how to educate students better. The most effective schools, like Cabot, have in them teachers who are never satisfied, never complacent, and always seeking the best way to maximize learning in the classroom so that everyone can actively whistle.
I look forward to providing you with updates on how our professional learning communities are doing and how you as parents can become partners in the process. In my non-hierarchal status, I am enthusiastic about learning along with my colleagues at Cabot in our professional learning communities.

It is hard to believe that the fall has already begun. The school year is off to a very smooth start. The faculty and students are busy and look happy. Walking through the school you get a sense of all the hard work that is going on.
Back to School Night was a great success; it was nice to see many new faces in the hallways.
With the help of parent volunteers, Picture Day went smoothly and brought smiles to many faces.
The PTO is busy organizing many special events to enrich the Cabot experience this year, from planning the impressive Creative Arts & Sciences programs, to compiling the Cabot directory, to planning the fun filled Cabot Community Supper. Speaking of the supper, please join us tonight from 5-7:00. All Cabot families are welcome to bring a picnic dinner or purchase pizza. Look for posters around the school; lots of activities are planned. Come and hang out with your Cabot friends--and make some new ones! We want to acknowledge and thank everyone for following the Blue Zone rules at drop-off and pick-up time. We appreciate your efforts in walking, parking a little farther away, or taking the bus to school. Safety of children and adults is our main concern. Please remember that Wednesday, October 8, is International Walk to School Day. There are many citywide initiatives to encourage everyone to do a little bit more walking that day. Finally, we hope you were able to join us at our first PTO meeting last week. We had a good turnout of about 30 people, many new parents. Minutes of the PTO meeting will be posted on the website shortly.
Please be aware that many programs at Cabot are possible because of parent involvement, so please, this year, consider volunteering at least eight hours of your time in your child's classroom or at school events. It is always inspiring to see the efforts of so many dedicated volunteers - thank you. Again, welcome back! We are looking forward to a successful and productive year.

Head Lice Information Back-to-school means new beginnings, shared summer vacation stories and sometimes, shared head lice! Please partner with the school nurse to prevent the spread of head lice. Check your child regularly for:
- Lice eggs (called nits) - These look like tiny yellow, tan or brown dots on the hair shaft close to the scalp. They may look like dandruff but they cannot be removed by shaking or brushing the hair.
- Live lice - These are tiny, wingless insects about the size of a sesame seed, usually light brown but, can vary in color. They cannot jump or fly but they move very quickly and shy away from light.
- Scratching of the head - this is due to bites from the lice and may not start right away
- Small red blotches on the scalp
Head lice are spread through direct, person-to-person contact, or through contact with an infested person's personal items. Children should be encouraged not to share hats, scarves, brushes, combs, or hair ties to prevent spreading head lice. Diagnosing and removing head lice requires patience. Regular shampoo will not get rid of lice. If you suspect your child may have head lice, contact the school nurse for advice and information. Additional information is available in the School Health section of the Health & Human Services website at http://www.ci.newton.ma.us/health/index.htm
Emergency Preparedness: Ready or Not? September is National Preparedness Month, highlighting a great time for families to take steps toward becoming more prepared. The prepared family has two important pieces in place: a kit and a plan. Having a kit means having food, water, first aid supplies and tools that might be needed during an emergency. Having a plan means having a written list of important phone numbers and a place the family can meet up if members are separated. If you're just starting to develop your kit and plan, checklists are available on the Health & Human Services Department website at www.ci.newton.ma.us/health/index.htm or through your school nurse. If your family already has a kit and a plan, September is a great time to check your supplies for expired items and review phone numbers for any changes. Whether it's a hurricane, flood, fire or familiar New England snowstorm, having a kit and a plan will help make your family more prepared.

Upcoming Events at Cabot
|
Tuesday, September 23 @ 5:00pm Cabot Community Supper Join us for this great annual Cabot family event. Come along with the whole family and enjoy the evening with the Cabot community. Remember to send in your pizza order forms (found in the PTO Welcome Packet) to ensure we have enough pizza. Tickets will be on sale at the event. Pizza and an array of delicious desserts will be available for purchase as well as a variety of school merchandise such as Cabot T-shirts, caps etc.
There will be hip-hop, capture the flag and other activities to keep you entertained throughout the evening. All proceeds benefit the Cabot PTO and help support the PTO enrichment activities for Cabot students.
The dessert table at the community supper needs you! After pizza, we'll offer an array of desserts including brownies, cookies and cup cakes. If you'd like to bake or contribute a dessert, please bring it to school at drop-off or at pick-up. The rain date is September 25th.
Wednesday, October 8 International Walk to School Day International Walk to School Day is Wednesday October 8, 2008. Cabot will be joining schools from 42 countries around the world to celebrate. In the U.S., 5,000 schools from all 50 states are scheduled to participate.
We are requesting you make an effort to walk to School on Wednesday, October 8th. If walking is not feasible, try to car pool or walk to the school bus instead of driving, or take a walk around the school or the field to participate.
Walk to School Day was established in the United States in 1997 by the Partnership for a Walkable America. Canada and Great Britain already had walk to school programs in place. In 2000, these three countries joined together to create International Walk to School Day.
Walk to School Day began as a simple idea - children and parents, school and local officials walking to school together on a designated day. It is an energizing event, reminding everyone of the simple joy of walking to school, the health benefits of regular daily activity, and the need for safe places to walk and bike. Schools focus on health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment.

Contacting Cabot Office
We
are sure you know how busy the Cabot Office is all day long, running
the school while assisting the faculty and students. While assisting
with any special circumstance is always accommodated, we ask you to
please refrain from contacting the office for scheduling requests, such
as playdates or alternative pick-up plans to relay to your child on a
particular day.
Most teachers use email as a means of communication if you need to inform them of something, as well as a take-home, bring back folders. These methods are usually quicker and less disruptive than calling the office to take a message to be placed in a mailbox. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
Call Back/Safe Arrival at Cabot School What do I do if my child will be absent or late from school? The Cabot Safe Arrival/Call Back Program helps ensure that children arrive safely at school each morning. If your child will be absent or late, call 617-559-9390 between 6:00 pm the night before and 8:35 am on the day of absence. Speaking slowly and clearly, leave the following information: Your name, your child's name, teacher's name and grade, and date and reason of absence or tardiness. You should call in each day of sickness. If you know ahead of time that it will extend beyond one day, please leave that information on the phone message.
Cabot Directory Every year the PTO produces a Directory containing an entry for every Cabot family and class lists. This Directory is an invaluable resource for keeping in touch with other parents and arranging for play-dates. Please fill out and return the directory form. If you are a returning family please take a moment to check your entry in last year's Directory & email CHANGES ONLY to Jenny at jenny@seckler.com.
School store open The school store is now open every Tuesday from 8:10 to 8:30am. We carry pencils, erasers, sharpeners, folders, rulers and other school-related items. Proceeds from the school store go to the fifth graders to offset the cost of their yearbook, t-shirt and community service project. Over the course of the year, every student will receive a 50-cent certificate on his/her birthday to spend at the school store, so be on the lookout. Thanks to the PTO for funding the birthday certificates and keeping alive this grand Cabot tradition! Contact: Karen Lumino, 617-630-5073 or family@swain.name.
Box Tops For Education As we have all heard, Cabot's student population is growing. The greater our number, the more food we eat and the more items we buy. Box Tops for Education wants to reward us for that, so let's accept the offer! CLIP the Box Tops logo when you see it on products from General Mills, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Ziploc, Kleenex and others. Save your clipped Box Tops and place them in the bright pink Box Tops collection box in the lobby at school. Clipping Box Tops is a great way to encourage your kids to support Cabot. Click here to see a list of participating products: www.boxtops4education.com/Downloads/Global/products.pdf Last year 5 people in the Cabot community did their on line shopping through the Box Tops Marketplace. There are many more of us who shop on line. Please take a moment to register with the Box Tops Marketplace and watch Cabot start earning some "free" money! When you shop online, start at the Cabot PTO website (www.cabotpto.org/shop/index.html) and it will prompt you to register with Box Tops. You only have to register one time, and then each time you shop on-line, start at the Cabot PTO shopping link and make sure you login and a portion of your purchase will be donated to Cabot. Box Tops has partnered with over 60 online stores (including Land's End, Target, Oriental Trading Post, Kodak Easy Share and many more). Tell your kids' grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends to sign up to support Cabot. It's really an easy way to earn money for all of the programs that the Cabot PTO sponsors. How wonderful that you can support Cabot by doing things you already do: eat and shop! Happy clipping and shopping!
Sally Foster Gift Wrap Kick-Off Cabot PTO's annual gift-wrap sale has started and runs through October 7th. This is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Cabot School PTO and a great time to stock up on quality gift-wrap paper for the holidays and other occasions throughout the year. Share the catalog with your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Remember that you can get friends and family from out of town to order on-line. Just go to the seller section at www.SallyFoster.com and enter your child's information. Then enter the e-mail addresses of your friends and family. They don't even need to remember the Cabot account number (0249978). It's easy, and your child can earn prize credits. Any questions, contact Kate Johnson at kate@textreviews.com.
Walking School Buses Cabot, along with the City of Newton, has made a commitment to decrease traffic congestion around the school by increasing walking, bus ridership, car pools and alternative parking areas. We had great success last year with these initiatives. We have been tracking the improvement and found some encouraging news:
Spring Spring Increase/ 2007 2008 Decrease Walk to school 27% 37% 10% Take school bus 8% 11% 3% Drive to school 64% 48% -16% Other 1% 4% 3% Total 100% 100%
Thank you Cabot Community for making a commitment! Walking to school and bus ridership increased by a total of 13% and car traffic reduced by 16%! The increase in the 'other' category was the formation of a few carpools that also helped to alleviate traffic congestion.
Of course, it is our goal to reduce traffic congestion even further. We request that you consider the following suggestions when planning your travel to school:
- When driving, consider parking on near-by streets and walking. For example, East Side Parkway, Winchester Road, Westchester Road, Clarendon Street and Withington Road all have ample parking and are very convenient to the school.
- If you are eligible, take the school bus!
- Make a commitment to walk to school! Join the walking school bus - right now we have 2 routes: one from the Surrey Road area and one from the Morse Road area.
- Start a walking School bus of your own. Do you live in an area where there are lots of Cabot students? The City has provided us with a map of all households and we can help you identify those families which may be on your route. Walking school buses have many benefits other than traffic reduction, for example, it encourages students to stay fit and healthy, learn safe pedestrian skills and start the day alert, not to mention that for every 100 children to walk instead of being driven, approximately 35,000 pounds of pollutants will be kept out of our air!

If you have a desire to help a child in need of a family, please call Janelle at (617) 628-3696. You have nothing to lose by finding out more information, but the children have so much to gain. Dare...to make a difference!

Morning Coffee - Local Chapter of Stand for Children Stand for Children is a statewide children's advocacy organization with local chapters working on issues that pertain to all of us. Last year it focused a lot of effort on the Override, and this year there are new issues at stake, including opposing Ballot Question 1 which is on the November ballot to eliminate State Income Tax. If you are curious to learn more information and/or want to get involved in small ways or bigger ways in some of the many local and statewide issues, please join us for an information meeting. Two Cabot parents are helping lead our local chapter of Stand for Children and are hosting a morning coffee at the home of Liz Haas on Friday, September 26 at 9 am. Haiti Fundraiser With the help of Social Action Committee, Kelly Philips, Vani Sayeed, Iman Sayeed, and 5th graders, the school supported the collection of funds and clothes for the people in Haiti who were affected by recent floods. A thank you note from Dr. Sad Sayeed: "Sally - Thanks for the note and the PTO support. I am extremely proud to be a member of the Cabot community - the PIH staffers were so pleased by the amount of clothes we collected and are really grateful. More importantly, the children in Haiti will have more clothes and shoes to wear as soon as next week. We also managed to collect over $500 dollars from the school community, mostly in small dollar amounts. How wonderful!"
